We are proud to support the Mouse-Free Marion Project's fundraising initiatives through the sale of Mini and Hiking AR Gaiters in a customised Mouse-Free Marion design. We will donate a portion from the sale of each pair of these Mini and Hiking AR Gaiters to this very important project.

House mice, accidentally introduced by humans to Marion Island in the early 1800s, initially fed on insects and plants. Declining insect populations have driven mice to find alternative food sources, which now include the eggs, chicks and, increasingly, the adults of many of the island’s globally important seabirds.  19 species face local extinction.

The Mouse-free Marion Project needs to raise R600-million to eradicate the invasive mice by using methods that have been tried and tested on over 700 other islands. Funding will come from government (the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment: the DFFE) in the way of a financial contribution and in-kind support with crucial ship support, helicopter fuel, and accommodation on the island. The balance of the costs must being sourced from the private sector, with BirdLife South Africa (BLSA) spearheading these fundraising initiatives both in South Africa and abroad.

This donation initiative from AR Gaiters is just one avenue that, together with hundreds of others, will help the Mouse-Free Marion Project to achieve their fundraising objectives to execute this project. Each R1,000 donated sponsors 1 hectare of mouse eradication on the island.

These Mouse-Free Marion Project AR Gaiters come in Mini and Hiking models. They will be loved by birders whether you buy them for yourself or gift them to birding friends.
